چکیده

For species in which group membership frequently changes, it has been a challenge to characterize variation in individual interactions and social structure. Quantifying this variation is necessary to test hypotheses about ecological determinants of social patterns and to make predictions about how group dynamics aVect the development of cooperative relationships and transmission processes. Network models have recently become popular for analyzing individual contacts within a population context. We use network metrics to compare populations of Grevy’s zebra (Equus grevyi) and onagers (Equus hemionus khur). These closely related equids, previously described as having the same social system, inhabit environments diVering in the distribution of food, water, and predators. Grevy’s zebra and onagers are one example of many sets of coarsely similar Wssion–fusion species and populations, observed elsewhere in other ungulates, primates, and cetaceans. Our analysis of the population association networks reveals contrasts consistent with their distinctive environments. Grevy’s zebra individuals are more selective in their association choices. Grevy’s zebra form stable cliques, while onager associations are more Xuid. We Wnd evidence that females associate assortatively by reproductive state in Grevy’s zebra but not in onagers. The current approach demonstrates the utility of network metrics for identifying Wne-grained variation among individuals and populations in association patterns. From our analysis, we can make testable predictions about behavioral mechanisms underlying social structure and its eVects on transmission processes.

Similar but Different: Dynamic Social Network Analysis Highlights Fundamental Differences between the Fission-Fusion Societies of Two Equid Species, the Onager and Grevy’s Zebra

Understanding why animal societies take on the form that they do has benefited from insights gained by applying social network analysis to patterns of individual associations. Such analyses typically aggregate data over long time periods even though most selective forces that shape sociality have strong temporal elements. By explicitly incorporating the temporal signal in social interaction dat...

Is the endangered Grevy’s zebra threatened by hybridization?

Hybridization between an abundant species and an endangered species is cause for concern. When such hybridization is observed, it is both urgent and necessary to assess the level of threat posed to the endangered species. We report the first evidence of natural hybridization between two equids: the endangered Grevy’s zebra Equus grevyi and the abundant plains zebra Equus burchelli. Grevy’s zebr...

Male harassment influences female movements and associations in Grevy’s zebra (Equus grevyi)

In traditional models for social organization, female movements and association patterns track resource distribution, whereas males track females. More recently, this model has been expanded to include feedback effects of male behavior, especially sexual harassment, on female decisions. In Grevy’s zebra (Equus grevyi), males defend territories containing resources attractive to females, who for...

SUMMARY RESEARCH REPORT: BRITISH VETERINARY ASSOCIATION Comparative observations on strongyle parasites in domestic horses (Equus ferus caballus), Grevy’s zebra (Equus grevyi) and Plains zebra (Equus quagga boehmi) in Kenya – a pilot study

Grevy’s zebra (Equus grevyi) populations declined dramatically in the last decades of the 20 century. Though now stabilising, there has been an estimated 50-68% drop in numbers over the past 18 years (IUCN, 2012). While there are many threats facing the species, the role of parasite burdens in this decline is poorly understood. Lewa Wildlife Conservancy provides ex situ or marginal (transition ...
